Smokebox

Chimney casting, if you tap it, it rings like a bell, pattern and casting by Cerdic foundry. Coincidentally some historians believe that the Jute warlord Hengist had a great grandson called Cerdic.
Smokebox
This is of the cylindrical type, resting on a fabricated saddle. The blast pipe has a plain circular cap of 5 in. nozzle diameter, which incorporates the blower ring. The smokebox is of the self-cleaning type, having plates and a wire mesh grid so arranged as to prevent accumulation of ash in the smokebox when the engine is working.
On the right-hand side is mounted a tri-tone chime whistle, operated from cab by flexible cable passing down the right-hand handrail on the boiler.
A stuffing box on the left-hand side allows the regulator shaft to pass through the smokebox plate.
Historical Notes
In light of trials and modifications to Standard Class 5 blastpipes 19/02/54 Sc Region to modify blast pipe and/or chimney for trial. St Rollox to carry out modified chimney choke and reduction in blast pipe cap from 5.25in. to 5in.
21/04/54 Derby to produce scheme for new chimney liner with a 1ft. 2.75in. choke, Derby agreed to supply an existing type of L.M bellmouth and ejector exhaust ring suitable for the trial.
18/08/54 engine 72004 had been fitted with a modified blast pipe and chimney with promising results. Cox's suggested rest of class altered similarly, as there was a definite improvement on steaming.
E. S. Cox commented that by reducing the blast pipe diameter by quarter of an inch to sharpen the exhaust in this way would provide greater leeway to counter unfavourable conditions. All the class received new blast pipes in 1954 and in conclusion Mr. Cox ruefully wrote,
'thus making them even more reliable steamers.'
