Main Frames

Hengist main Frames being cut out at Corus, all the dimensions were programmed into a computer which then controlled the cutting torches. Two billets were specially rolled to 1.25 ins thick to form the blank slabs.

Main Frames

The main frames are of 1.25 in. thick plate spaced 3ft. 2.5 in. apart, the centre lines coinciding with the centre of the axlebox guide faces. The axlebox guides are welded in integrally with the frame plates and are fitted with manganese liners. The frames are well braced by vertical and horizontal stretchers and by pin jointed cross stays attached to the horn plates.

The end rear frame extension consists of two 2 in. thick slabs riveted to the main plates behind the trailing coupled wheels and carry a fabricated dragbox at the hind end. A solid drawbar transmits the tractive effort to the tender, with side intermediate buffers on the tender bearing on rubbing plates on the engine dragbox. Two of the vertical stretchers support the front of the boiler barrel and the firebox front on adjusted brass wearing liners, while the back of the firebox is carried on brackets on the rear extension frames. The side footplating is carried by brackets fixed to the boiler.

Historical Notes

Lot 242 class 6 new frame arrangement drawing incorporatates new design of cast steel frame cross stretchers with integral spring hangers as fitted to B.R class 8 and specified for all the class 7 'Pacifics' which were also cancelled. This modification prevented the frame cracking experienced on original class 7 Britannias, it also improved the ride, considered by crews who have worked 71000 to be the best. This also meant new slotting and drilling drawings had to be drawn up.

On 72000 - 9 the steam brake cylinder was supported on one of the frame stretchers, this was changed on the lot 242 Clans to include an additional cast steel support.
