Braking
The engine and tender have steam brakes which can be worked independently or in conjunction with the vacuum brake by means of a separate drivers valve.
Brake blocks of the single type supply the brake power to the six coupled wheels and all tender wheels.
Brake rigging is grease-lubricated.
Historical Notes
A 'Britannia' class snatched and broke its Loco to tender coupling. The severed vacuum pipe automatically brought the tender and its train to a safe halt, the crew however had no means of stopping the engine as the steam supply to the engine and tender steam brakes was also severed. As a result Klinger valves were fitted along with safety chains, in an emergency the valve can be used to isolate the engine steam brake from the tender steam brake.
The fitting of A.W.S included modifications to the brake system and control.
