Axleboxes

The engine and tender are carried on Timken tapered roller bearing axleboxes throughout, those for the bogie and coupled axles being of the non-split cannon type. The faces of the axleboxes in contact with the horn guides are provided with manganese steel liners welded to the body of the axlebox, and are lubricated with soft grease.

Historical Notes

On the 24th January 1961: 3 Class 6 Clans failed on bogie Cannon boxes after converting to grease lubrication. Examinations of the boxes showed that initial lateral clearances of bearings in boxes had to be changed.

Firms report 24th March 1961 - Initial bearing end clearance should be increased by 0.018 in. - 0.020 in., the original limits were 0.008 in. - 0.012 in. This change was carried out by B.R - no further problems.
